There will be a parish lunch after the Divine Liturgy on Sunday 19th November. We will get together at the Haseler Hall, underneath the new building at All Saints’ Church, Howick. Please bring a plate to share. Note that the Nativity Fast will have started by that time, so if possible bring something that those who are fasting can share in too (wine, oil and fish are OK, but not meat, dairy and eggs). We look forward to seeing everybody there.
Archimandrite Basilios Kodseie has been elected as metropolitan of the Antiochian Orthodox Archdiocese of Australia, New Zealand, Oceania and the Philippines. We pray for our metropolitan-elect and wish him many years! Details of his consecration to the episcopate will follow soon.
Our beloved sister in Christ and long-standing member of our parish community Liliana Mateescu reposed in The Lord last Thursday. Fr George will be in Auckland to preside at Liliana’s funeral service on Tuesday 18th July. We pray for Liliana’s repose, and for the Nicolau and Mateescu families. We especially pray for and extend our love to Ioana and Theo and their family at this time. Memory eternal!
Archimandrite Basilios Kodseie has been appointed by Patriarch John as Patriarchal Vicar for our archdiocese. This is a temporary arrangement pending the appointment of a new archbishop by the Patriarch and the Synod, so Archimandrite Basilios will be caring for us during this interim period. Please pray for him, and for Patriarch John and the Synod, at this time.

Metropolitan Paul’s funeral arrangements have been published by the archdiocese. Viewing and acceptance of condolences are underway at the moment. Our beloved archbishop, His Eminence Metropolitan Paul Saliba of thrice-blessed memory, reposed in The Lord on the morning of July 1st. News reached the Antiochian Orthodox community in New Zealand late on Saturday evening, in time for a memorial to be held for His Eminence after Divine Liturgy on Sunday morning in Howick. We pray that His Eminence’s memory be eternal, and we pray also for His Beatitude Patriarch John as he addresses the task of appointing a new shepherd for the Antiochian Orthodox Archdiocese of Australia, New Zealand and The Philippines.
What is a Reader Typica Service? The Typica generally is a brief service based on readings that is appointed by the Typikon for certain types of occasion. The Reader Typica service mirrors the Divine Liturgy, and is used when a priest is not available. It can also be used by members of a congregation who cannot get to church. It is usually led by a deacon, subdeacon, reader, chanter, or the eldest experienced layperson present, in that order.
An example of a Reader Typica service (English version of the Russian usage) can be found here.
As with the Divine Liturgy, everybody is welcome to attend the Typica Service, which is appointed for use at St George’s Mission when Fr George is not available.
